When lighting engineers use HMI flood lights, it is difficult to point them directly on the actors (too powerful, too much glare). The flood lights have then to be mounted on scaffolding/stands and reflectors have to be installed. With Lunar Lighting, all these structures and manipulations are avoided, the light is diffused through the fabric of the envelope (which is recognized by light specialists to have highly exceptional lighting quality).

The cost of helium gas is more than compensated by the savings on structures, manipulations and personnel. Outdoor, the Lunar Lighting balloons have a strong lift which allows easier guying of the envelope, less dangerous than stabilizing large fabric reflectors. The envelopes are used mainly for general lighting of a scene, because of it's homogeneous light. Furthermore, it is possible by raising and lowering the envelope to change the type of lighting (from daylight to moonlight).
